Are Smart Locks Worth It? A Locksmith's Honest Take
Smart locks are everywhere now β on hardware-store shelves, in delivery ads, and on the front doors of half the homes we visit across Los Angeles, Ventura County, and the San Fernando Valley. The question we hear most often from homeowners is simple: are smart locks actually worth it? After 22+ years installing, servicing, and occasionally rescuing people from every kind of lock, here's our honest, no-hype answer.
The short version
For most households, a good smart lock is worth it β if it's the right model for your door and it's installed correctly. The convenience is real: keyless entry, unique codes for family and guests, and the end of hiding a key under the mat. But a cheap unit installed on a misaligned door will frustrate you daily. The hardware matters, and so does the install.
What smart locks do well
No more lockouts from a lost key. Enter a code or use your phone and you're in. Control who has access. Give a house cleaner or dog walker their own code and delete it when the job ends β no copied keys floating around. Know when the door was opened. Many models log entries and send alerts. Auto-lock. If you're the type who forgets to lock up on the way out, a smart lock that locks itself is genuinely reassuring, especially in busier LA neighborhoods.
Where they fall short
Batteries die β usually with plenty of warning, but keep a backup plan. Wi-Fi models depend on your network, and the cheapest units have flimsy internals that wear out fast. And here's the part people miss: a smart lock is only as strong as the deadbolt and strike behind it. A slick app won't help a door that isn't hung square. That's why we always check the door itself before recommending a model.
Smart lock or a solid deadbolt?
If you rent, move often, or just want dead-simple reliability, a quality traditional deadbolt with a fresh rekey is still an excellent, budget-friendly choice. If you value remote access, guest codes, and entry logs β and you'll actually use those features β a smart lock earns its keep. Many of our customers land on a hybrid: a smart lock on the front door and standard high-security deadbolts elsewhere.
